A deep love that lasted thirty years bound Giacomo Puccini to the charming village of Torre del Lago, which, to the pride of all its inhabitants, has long since changed its name to Torre del Lago Puccini.
The Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago is one of the most eagerly awaited events in Tuscany’s rich cultural calendar; it is Italy’s most important opera festival and the only one in the world dedicated to the composer Giacomo Puccini. It takes place every summer, in July and August, in the very places that inspired Maestro Puccini to compose his immortal melodies.
In 1891, Giacomo Puccini arrived for the first time in Torre del Lago, a small village on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli between Pisa and Viareggio. He fell in love with the place and decided to make it his home. In 1899, he bought the property and had it renovated: thus was born the villa that would be his home for over thirty years. Not merely a birthplace, but something more: the place where Puccini chose to live, where he found inspiration, and where he composed almost all of his most important operas. Within these walls were created Manon Lescaut (1893), La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900), Madama Butterfly (1904), La Fanciulla del West (1910), La Rondine (1917) and Il Trittico (1918).
