“I have always thought, and I say this as a Frenchman, that the Italian Risorgimento was one of the most important historical, intellectual and popular moments of Italian history […]. The soundtrack of this historical period was definitely Italian opera, and in particular the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. In fact, we could say that Giuseppe Verdi was the Ennio Morricone of Italy’s Risorgimento […]. The Nabucco I wanted to describe is ideally set in Milan during the Five Days and, when doing this, I made use of one of the major symbols of Italian musical culture throughout the world: the city’s Teatro alla Scala”.
The production of the world’s best known and most loved opera is by the great Franco Zeffirelli (direction and set design) and Maurizio Millenotti (costume design). The colossal production is the most ambitious ever realized by the Verona workshops and crowns the dream of the Florentine maestro after 60 years’ working on the Verdi masterpiece. The artists, management and all the Festival’s workers are united in paying tribute to Franco Zeffirelli just a few days after his death. The 2021 Festival of the Arena di Verona Foundation will present the productions originally planned for the 2020 Festival with the addition of further events of the highest caliber.
